Show Notes

Hello, and welcome to PlayPods, the new series from the GOSH Learning Academy.

Today, Tuesday the 11th of June 2024, is the first ever International Day of Play. Play can foster empathy, creativity, and resilience. For those children and young people in hospital it is vital for promoting wellbeing, offering a safe outlet for big emotions, a space to feel grounded, and even as a means of understanding and navigating the complicated and scary world of health care.

We created this series to highlight the vital role the Play Team at GOSH play in creating spaces for play for the babies, children, and young people who are treated in our hospital.

Keep an ear out for the first episode dropping 7th August 2024. We can't wait to see you there.

Hello, and welcome to Playpods, the new series from the GOSH Learning Academy. Today Tuesday the 11th of June 2024 is the first ever International Day of Play, created by the United Nations to act, as they say, as “an annual reminder of the urgency to ensure and promote play across the ages”. The right for children's play is even in enshrined as Article 31 in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Play can foster empathy, creativity, and resilience. For those children and young people in hospital it is vital for promoting wellbeing, offering a safe outlet for big emotions, a space to feel grounded, and even as a means of understanding and navigating the complicated and scary world of health care. The play team at Great Ormond Street Hospital is entirely funded by the GOSH charity. We created this series to highlight the vital role they play in creating spaces for play for the babies, children, and young people who are treated in our hospital. We've got four great episodes for you. In episode one we ask what is play and why does it matter? In episode two, we'll talk about the therapeutic use of play during clinical procedures. In episode three we'll talk about normalizing and developmental play. And finally in episode four we'll talk to a young person about their experiences of play whilst a patient at Great Ormond Street. In every episode you'll get to hear from members of the play team about their role and the amazing work that they do. Episode one will be released right here on GOSHpods on Wednesday the 7th of August to coincide with the UK’s National Day of Play, and then episodes will drop weekly for the month of August, so make sure you're subscribed wherever you get your podcasts. We can't wait to see you there. This Podcast is brought to you by the GOSH Learning Academy.
